One of the unique features of pneumatic fins is that symmetry is prioritized. This is because pneumatically operated fins don’t get locked.
This is exactly why a multi-fin system is used. Rather than having a limited number of large fin stabilizer, a set of smaller fins on each side of the boat will compensate for the size. The number of fins placed on each side is also determined by the size of the boat.
How pneumatic systems compare to hydraulic systems
Hydraulic systems make use of large fins, which have a slow reaction time. This reduces speed. As a way to compensate for the loss of speed, the fins are made larger. But, this creates more drag.
Also, hydraulic systems come with computerized systems that can adjust the position of the fins. This prevents the fins from moving the boat sideways even when the boat is in motion. However, this leads to another issue with hydraulic systems which is that the fins are never positioned at the center, even when the boat is moving in a forward direction. Once again, more drag is created.
All of this causes hydraulic systems to reduce the speed by at least 3 knots. Boat stabilizers
However, pneumatic systems are quite different. They actually end up increasing the speed because of the multi-fin approach. For instance, an 82’ Sunseeker fitted with a pneumatic system reported a speed gain of up to 2 knots.
Advantages of a multi-fin system
You can generally choose between a 4 fin or 6 fin system. Of course, this depends on the vessel’s size and speed, as stated earlier.
You’re probably wondering if your vessel qualifies for a pneumatic multi yacht stabilizer system. Well, if your boat measures at least 48’ and has a speed of 15 knots, it does qualify for a 4 fin system. Similarly, anything that does 16 knots or over and measures 58’ to 85’ qualifies as well.
For a 6 fin system, your vessel must measure 90’ to 160’ and travel at 16 knots or more.
One of the key benefits of a pneumatic system is that they produce almost no drag and even boost speed. In fact, green water trapping beneath the hull increases speed significantly. Plus, they provide support for the entire length of the vessel.
Also, yawing and pitch motions are reduced
Finally, there is better roll stabilization too. Gyro Stabilizer
